OpenStudio on OSX 10.8

Hello,

this is my first mailing to this list. Sorry for my bad English, I am located in Austria.

I try to setup Open Studio with the radiance functionality on my Macbook. After a series of trials with no success I start a new attempt and try to follow the available instructions as close as possible.

I just did a fresh installation of OSX 10.8 on a separate partition.

1. question: This is a German OSX version, could that lead to any problems?

2. question: OSX 10.8 comes with Ruby 1.8.7. The "Radiance_Installation_Instructions_0_9_0.pdf" says "Install RUBY 1.8.6" so ist 1.8.6 required?

If yes, are there any hints how to downgrade to Ruby 1.8.6?

3. question: The installation sequence according to "Radiance_Installation_Instructions_0_9_0.pdf" seems to be reverse to the sequence described in the "Installation Instructions" on the Open Studio Webpage. The notes for OS X on that webpage also tell that Ruby 1.8.6 or 1.8.7 is supported, which comes back to question number 2.

4. question: "Radiance_Installation_Instructions_0_9_0.pdf" tells to do a separate Perl installation (ActivePerl is recommended). Is this true also for OSX?

Many thanks for any help on my way.

Best regards

Martin Klingler

Hi Martin (your English is just fine),

1. I'm fairly certain we have some German/Austrian OpenStudio users...
2. Ruby 1.8.7 works just fine with OpenStudio -- in fact, yours is the same setup as I have (OSX10.8 + Ruby 1.8.7)
3. The install doc you are working off of is outdated (see #4).
4. The Perl install directive is only for people running OpenStudio on Windows; OSX and Linux users most likely already have Perl installed (as well as Ruby).

What version of OpenStudio are you trying to install? I highly recommend installing the latest iteration version, which is 0.9.3. That installer can be downloaded from the Developers tab on the OpenStudio website:

http://openstudio.nrel.gov/developers

Direct link to Mac installer:
http://openstudio.nrel.gov/accept/file/1162

Once you have that version installed, let us know how you make out. If you still have problems, please post some specifics about the nature of the problem.

Cheers,

- Rob

Hi Rob,

thank you very much for your instructions. I just did the complete installation (EnergyPlus 7.1, Sketchup 8, Radiance 4.2.a and Openstudio 0.9.3).

I then followed very closely your tutorial about OpenStudio New Features - Radiance Integration. But the run failed (see https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27495200/Pic2.png).

Just in case, I have uploaded also my example file (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27495200/office2.zip).

In Sketchup, when closing the preference window there is a warning about the path to EnergyPlus(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27495200/Pic1.png). But the tools seem to be recognized (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27495200/Pic3.png).

Any idea what is going wrong?

Thanks and best regards

Hi Martin,

The first thing I would do is to re-run "scan for tools" in the OS app (under the File… menu). Make sure EnergyPlus 7.1 is there, and then remove as a tool any other versions of EnergyPlus that may show up. Generally those shouldn’t matter, but we have seen cases where having an old version prevented the simulation from running.

Hi, Martin

I’m facing the same problem. I did try to do the simulation through
simulation, however I did not succeed.

I just want to know whether you manage to solve the problem or not.

Hi Martin (your English is just fine),

1. I’m fairly certain we have some German/Austrian OpenStudio users...

Cheers,

- Rob

Subject: [Radiance-openstudio] OpenStudio on OSX 10.8

Hello,

this is my first mailing to this list.

Hi Rob,
I'm using OpenStudio 0.9.3, EnergyPlus 7.1.0
Radiance is installed in c drive;

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0ByEvb-Y7hX3xQlNZbl9LWE1YeFE

The error I'm receiving is just that the simulation has failed:

Actually I did follow the steps as shown in Martin message.

Thanks

Hi Khalod, hi Rob,

had to do some work away from home, so it took some time.

I had no success on the OSX platform. Also 0.9.4 doesn´t change anything.

The run stops very fast with the following messages in stdout:

?ruby -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site/1.8? -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/powerpc-darwin12.0? -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/universal-darwin12.0? -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site? -I ?/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8? -I ?/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/universal-darwin12.0? -I ?/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby? -I ?/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8? -I ?/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin12.0? -I ?/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/universal-darwin12.0? -I ?.? -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site/? -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site/openstudio? -I ?/Library/Ruby/Site/lib? ?./ModelToRad.rb? ?/private/var/folders/30/8y6hrx_12fs91f5ls6rs38dw0000gn/T/qt_temp.JpW419/resources/run/0-Ruby/in.osm? ???

no sql file given, running EnergyPlus...

Found EnergyPlus.

failed to run ModelToRad

Stderr tells the following:

./ModelToRad.rb:166:in `create?: Unable to locate file in search paths (RuntimeError)

from ./ModelToRad.rb:166

On the other hand I had success with Windows 7. No problems with installation and run radiance within OpenStudio (I will go on testing with the command line tools).

As my final target will be OSX, I still appreciate any idea concerning my problem.

Many thanks and best regards

Martin

OK, that's a good thing. How many spaces and illuminance maps do you have
in the model? Currently the program computes each map serially, i.e. one
at a time, so you'll have to wait for it to finish all the maps before
it's fully done. After that, it will do a dimming analysis and create a
lighting load schedule for EnergyPlus, which is then automatically run as
well. It can take some time on a large model with lots of spaces. But it
does sound like things are working for you. When it's all done you should
see a "finished" message and hopefully zero errors (there are usually
warnings even on successful runs), and then you can open the eplusout.sql
file in ResultsViewer to review the daylighting.

Keep us posted!

- Rob

P.S. We are rewriting the daylighting script to compute all the points in
the model at one time, rather than space-by-space; this speeds up the
calculation times on large models significantly, and should be available
in the next iteration release which is due out early next week.

Ok, then after the annual daylighting sim, you should have seen some
messages about the lighting, and then the glare analysis, and finally the
EnergyPlus messages.

I'm happy to work with you offline on this, if you want to send me any
results or screenshots directly (I assume you've noticed that the list

The OpenStudio app does not support sub-annual runperiods (yet), so that
will likely not work for you. When you say the sim does not stop, is it
still printing messages to the console window, i.e. still "doing stuff"?

I'm happy to work with you offline on this, if you want to send me any
results or screenshots directly (I assume you've noticed that the list
server rejects posts with attachments?).

OK, that's a good thing. How many spaces and illuminance maps do you
have in the model? Currently the program computes each map serially,
i.e. one at a time, so you'll have to wait for it to finish all the
maps before it's fully done. After that, it will do a dimming analysis
and create a lighting load schedule for EnergyPlus, which is then
automatically run as well. It can take some time on a large model with
lots of spaces. But it does sound like things are working for you.
When it's all done you should see a "finished"
message and hopefully zero errors (there are usually warnings even on
successful runs), and then you can open the eplusout.sql file in
ResultsViewer to review the daylighting.

Keep us posted!

- Rob

P.S. We are rewriting the daylighting script to compute all the points
in the model at one time, rather than space-by-space; this speeds up
the calculation times on large models significantly, and should be
available in the next iteration release which is due out early next
week.

annual simulation is running; does it not continue on through to
December?

OK, sounds like it's working. It should go through every hour of the year,
and then it will perform the other calculations and let you know when it's
finished.

The OpenStudio app does not support sub-annual runperiods (yet), so that
will likely not work for you. When you say the sim does not stop, is it
still printing messages to the console window, i.e. still "doing stuff"?
