material properties of ancient window panes?

Hi,

does anybody know a ressource for material properties of window panes used in ancient buildings? I need data of window glass from byzanthine times (500-700 AD). I know few about it, and for reference (to see how good or how bad I guess) it would be great to compare with some measured data. I will search the library for literature about glass technology, maybe there is some reference to history. However, maybe one has worked on such materials before?

TIA + CU Lars.

Ive not done any work on that specific period, but I tried to tackle
this problem in my medieval abbey reconstruction of stained glass.
I found that for internal views of the glass the material glass was
best, as it could be textured and propagated the light well into the
room. As for external rendering, the glass was far too reflective,
almost like a mirror , therefore I used trans. Have a play with the
settings for it, the reflectivity can be adjusted etc, but I found it
difficult to get the same internal lighting quality with trans.

John

Hi John,

of course I watched your thread. In my model, the situation is a bit different. I don't care about exterior appearance, the windows are mainly light sources. However, as I am working on a model of a real building, I don't want to create a glass material just by guessing, and I am currently searching for e.g. measured data of glasses as used in that time. However... as almost all the light goes through these windows, the values of transmissivity and color will only change the numeric results, not the perceived appearance, right? So it is not that dangerous

Thank you + CU, Lars.
