A discussion from last year included an example of a simple shell-script to hide the intermediate stage of the conversion from 3ds to rad:
http://www.radiance-online.org/pipermail/radiance-general/2004-June/001836.html
If needed, you could add:
objview mat$nam.rad $nam.rad
at the end of the script to start objview on each newly converted model to give a quick visual check.

PS. The mgfilt line in the script was wrapped - see note in the message.

Thanks to all who responded to my question. I'll try all the various conversions and see what happens.
