FormZ & Radiance

What are people's experiences with FormZ and Radiance? I've got a school studio project which I would like (if there is time) to do some lighting studies on (yes, the one with the shoji) & it's currently modelled in FormZ. Last time I tried that I used OBJ format as a Radiance export method. What do people think--is that the way to go? Or...?

Hi Randolph!

I use dxf to export from formZ, and dxf2rad. I usually have one material
per layer, so that I can write one simple mapping file to map the layer
names that will be written by dxf2rad to my material lib. I also have to use
the -s .01 setting of dxf2rad, but that depends on the units you are using
in formZ.

All in all, it works great, and I also choose my views in formZ (in formZ,
if you use the Strg-E on Windows or Apple-E on Mac, you can define your
views, and the resulting view angle settings as well as the position and
direction can be used in radiance).

I didn't use obj as it gives some problems with your coordinate system, and
dxf simply works well.

I think that OBJ is the best way to export from FormZ to Radiance. When I did it, I was really surprised to see that all my geometry could be completely transfered, without problems.

Hi again,

BTW, if you are using the Windows version of formZ, which
is able to export 3ds, you get the colors imported (they are
ugly, not real radiance material definitions, but allow you togenerate
a quick preview to check geometry and material mapping), and
you might even be able to generate a simple animation as you
can get the geometry for all the frames in 3ds-animations if you
use 3ds2mgf. However, I never tried the animation stuff with 3ds.

So, I use dxf, and I only export geometry, the materials are defined
in one library file here.

Sounds like for me, the best way to do this is OBJ, since I can't easily use 3D Studio.

The last time I tried this, I found that the FormZ "subdivide concave faces" was useful; I suspect with curved surfaces its triangulation sub-option would be useful as well.
