what dou you thing about using irradiance gradients with diffuse reflections? i've made a little hack in radiance code and obtained this www.aisarquitectura.com/archivos/romi.jpg , the flloor is defined as
void metal suelo

i think i've missed something because the fllor is too dark, but it`s enough to see the effect
Hi Ignacio,
I'm not sure of your question, but there has been work on what's called "radiance caching" (as opposed to "irradiance caching") by Pascal Gautron <VR4i research team stopped at 2012-12-31; and Jaroslav Křivánek <http://www.cgg.cvut.cz/members/xkrivanj/>, among others.

from Jaroslav Křivánek
"Radiance Caching is a ray tracing-based method for accelerated global illumination computation in scenes with low-frequency glossy BRDFs. The method is based on sparse sampling, caching, and interpolating radiance on glossy surfaces. In particular we extend the irradiance caching scheme proposed by Ward et al. in 1988 to cache and interpolate directional incoming radiance instead of irradiance. The incoming radiance at a point is represented by a vector of coefficients with respect to a spherical or hemispherical basis."
oh yes, it's radiance caching, i must read more
