Dialux

Hi All,
Does anyone know about Dialux and whether it models
daylight accurately?
Cheers

Hi Nicholas.

Define 'accurate'.

We have done a small evaluation with a reference
modell which could be calculated following formulas
published in various BS (British Standard) papers.

The results for Dialux where around 10% over the
paper-and-pen calculations the Radiance results where
2-3% below, depending on the setting for ambient bounces.

Given that everything is reduced to ADF anyway you
can go with Dialux if the space is simple enough
to be modelled in Dialux. The images Dialux creates
are nice but not worth much if you want to evaluate
the appearance of the space.

The bigger problem with Dialux is that you realy
don't know what it's doing internally and you don't
have much controll over the rendering parameters
to test the effects. I'd say that it is crucial for
renderings where you have to rely on the accuracy
to know how the parameters affect the result. In
Radiance you'd do a few renderings with different
settings first to find a good compromise between
accuracy and rendering time. In Dialux you can only
click 'go' and accept what's dropping out at the end.

Nevertheless, it's a simple tool for simple jobs.

Cheers,
Thomas
