Just an idea for the first question: is your timestep small enough to model the 30 min absence? A timestep of one hour may give wrong results... You can check the intgain.csv file (in the /res directory of your project) for hourly information on occupancy, blind position and electric lighting use.
Consider posting your questions at the Daysim google group, people are more familiar with the problems there.
