3ds import to Daysim

Hello All,

My name is Annica Nilsson and I am new to this mailing list. I have just started my PhD studies at Uppsala University, Sweden, where my project will be related to optical characterization, daylighting simulations, and energy aspects. I am currently not a Mac user and I’ve therefore chosen to work with Daysim. I understand that this is a radiance mailing list, but I believe that Daysim is well-known to at least some of you, and I’m hoping that you will be able to help me.

My problem is that when I import my SketchUp files to Daysim the resulting material file references the ImportFrom3ds.geo.ra file rather than the C:/DAYSIM/materials/ catalogue, which from my understanding is the preferred reference.

This occurs for all materials in the SketchUp file that I have created and for the glazing materials in the example file (PrivateOffices.3ds) included with the Daysim program.

I’m using the DaysimMaterialsForSketchUp in my sketch and I have the style set to “Monochrom” before I export the 3ds file. What else do I need to think of when creating/exporting/importing my drawings?

I am new to the daylighting simulation world, but I’m hoping to learn, and I appreciate any hints, ideas, comments and help I can get.

Best regards,
Annica

Hi,

I cannot be helpful as I never worked with Daysim. But if it only the missing Mac - you can run Radiance on virtually every platform. For you, obviously sitting in front of a x86 PC, the easiest choice would be the Linux port (which is currently on its way to get included into the Debian Linux Distribution) or the various ways to run it on Windows. There are also bootable CDs available (Learnix).

CU Lars.

Dear Annica:

We have a little Daysim discussion forum going under
http://groups.google.com/group/daysim which might be better than
Radiance-online for Daysim-specific requests. In the archives of the
forum you will find that the problem that you are encountering is due to
that fact that SketchUP somehow changed their 3ds output files in
version 5 and up, REDUCING the number of characters allowed for each
material layer in 3ds. This has lead to the problem that most material
names are shortened and that the Daysim library does not recognize them
any more. As a workaround you have to manually change the material
descriptions for your Daysim/Radiance scene as described in the
tutorial.

Good luck and let me know in case your problems persist.

Christoph

Subject: [Radiance-general] 3ds import to Daysim

Hello All,

My name is Annica Nilsson and I am new to this mailing list. I have just
started my PhD studies at Uppsala University, Sweden, where my project
will be related to optical characterization, daylighting simulations,
and energy aspects. I am currently not a Mac user and I've therefore
chosen to work with Daysim. I understand that this is a radiance mailing

My problem is that when I import my SketchUp files to Daysim the
resulting material file references the ImportFrom3ds.geo.ra file rather
than the C:/DAYSIM/materials/ catalogue, which from my understanding is
the preferred reference.

This occurs for all materials in the SketchUp file that I have created

I'm using the DaysimMaterialsForSketchUp in my sketch and I have the

need to think of when creating/exporting/importing my drawings?

I am new to the daylighting simulation world, but I'm hoping to learn,
and I appreciate any hints, ideas, comments and help I can get.
