Hi Chris,

Thanks for the offer. I am just trying to contribute to the general discussion of Autocad geometry translation.

Thanks,

Hi Jack,

My apologies as my last email wasn't clear. Although expensive, ($1200) FormZ has proven over time to be a solid tool for repairing troublesome geometry files from AutoCad and other CAD packages. Rhino may also be a good choice but I have no knowledge of it.

To meet your immediate need I offer to process your dwg file through FormZ so you might evaluate it's usefulness prior to spending any money.

Thank you,

Chris Jessee

Hi Chris,

Well, I think that the ideal solution is in fact not to introduce another package (whether Form Z or Polytrans). However, that being said I think that if another package needs to be introduced then cost is a big big issue. Polytrans with the CadPak is ~$540 I think. As Form Z is a full blown cad/modeling application, I expect it costs ~$2000?

I guess if I was using Autocad and wanted/needed to introduce another package I might look at Rhino which does stuff that Autocad is not very good at.

You made a intermediary software such as FormZ.

I would be happy to convert your dwg to obj so you can evaluate the process.

Take care,

How do you get to obj format from cad. And then once you have a model in obj, do you need a certain program to properly export to radiance? Or is obj2rad just going to translate everything in the file?

We are looking at Torad. It still works under 2004. Looks like there are a couple of bugs that needed fixing including allowing the interface to run.
