FalseColor

Hi,

I would say that I have an adequate understanding of radiance. I am capable of producing renderings and performing glare analyses. I have been asked to produce a falsecolor illuminance rendering. I have the latest version of radiance installed and I see that there is a falsecolor program but I am not sure how to use it as it is not a recognized command. I have been told I need perl to operate the falsecolor program. What exactly is perl? Where do I download it and how do I install it? Once installed, to execute the falsecolor function same as calling it out in the command prompt like rpict and ies2rad? I was given this task today and need to produce this by the end of tomorrow. Any help provided would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Yes, the latest version of falsecolor is a Perl script, requiring Perl to be installed on your system. A couple of questions:

1. what operating system are you using? I’m guessing Windows, since Mac and Linux OSes ship with Perl. Regardless, here’s where you can get info on getting Perl:

http://www.perl.org/get.html

2. Are you sure you want an illuminance rendering? If so, you need to pass the “-i” (that’s a lowercase “I”) option to rtrace to get an irradiance image.

As always, the man page is the best source for usage info:

Hi Kyle,

Thanks to Thomas Bleicher, you can also use falsecolor2 and wxfalsecolor as
an alternative:

Thanks Mostapha, I forgot about that. Be advised, that's a Python script, so you're out of one interpreter/frying pan, and into another one, so to speak. =8-)

Hi Rob, Thank you for the explanation. You are right however Thomas also
provided the compiled .exe files for Windows that helps the user not to
feel the frying pan effect! =;-)

Hi Everyone,

I wrote about using Perl and the falsecolor command a few months back and unfortunately my computer was wiped clean so I had to reinstall program. I changed the path and raypath to the following to the location where I have Radiance saved:

Path = c:\Program Files\Radiance\bin
RAYPATH = c:\Program Files\Radiance\lib

but when I call upon the command, I am still being told it is not a recognized command.

This is the command I am using to call upon the image.

C:\g215th>falsecolor.pl –i june.hdr –log 2 -1 Lux > luxjune.hdr

Is there another step I am missing or do I have the programs installed incorrectly? I have Pearl and Radiance saved in two different folders if that matters.

Thanks,
Kyle

Kyle

When you installed Perl you may not have included the option to open *.pl
files with Perl. You can see on the file icon of falsecolor.pl if it has a
Perl association. Also check that the first line of falsecolor.pl contains
the location of perl.exe on your machine.

Thomas
