Are there any way to visualize geometry in rad file?

Dear all,

Are there any way to visualize geometry in rad file?
Converting rad file to any file extension which can be opened by rhinoceros is also ok.

Thank you.

Hi Katsuya,

There is a beautiful old tool by Francesco Anselmo called rad2obj: http://www.bozzograo.org/radiance/index.php?module=Downloads&func=display&lid=17

It can be very slow on large files, but for small ones it does the job in a jiffy.

Best,
Alstan

Another option for native Rad file viewing is AcceleradRT
<https://nljones.github.io/Accelerad/rt.html>. It enables Rhino-like
navigation.

If you have Radiance and and a working X installation you can use objview
from the Radiance tool set.

Peter Apian-Bennewitz's rshow was one of the earliest interactive rad geometry viewers, but the version I recall ran on IRIX. Not sure if this was ported in the meantime and is still maintained. Maybe Peter himself (howdy) can comment.

Peter Apian-Bennewitz posted last year on the radiance-dev list about rshow in this thread on glrad, the OpenGL viewer that comes with the standard distro:

  https://radiance-online.org/pipermail/radiance-dev/2016-April/001585.html

Skip to:

  https://radiance-online.org/pipermail/radiance-dev/2016-April/001697.html

to see what Peter wrote. For some reason, the man page for glrad is missing from radiance-online, but you can find it here:

And one more option - export to inventor or vrml through mgf: http://radsite.lbl.gov/mgf/mgfhtml/mgf2inv.html

I do not know about Rhino, but with e.g. Blender you can edit the resulting files.

Cheers, Lar.s

Katsuya,

Another way to view rad file in Rhinoceros is to use two Grasshopper3d's
object.
1) Honeybee_import Rad (you need to install Honeybee). This object give you
two separate output: Rad Material and RAD surfaces (these are grouped per
material type)
2) Next, if you want visualize the geometries without grasshopper3d you
need to bake the geometries by means of Human plugging (
http://www.food4rhino.com/).
I suggest you to set the Layer name as well as the geometry name equal to
RAD material name
